Tom Roberts

Loyd Thomas Roberts, II, 73, of Johnson City, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2011, at his residence.

He was a native of Homer, LA, and a son of the late, Loyd Thomas and Winifred Orr Roberts.

He was a graduate of ETSU where he received his B.A. and Master’s degrees. He received his Ph.D. at “Ole” Miss in Oxford, MS.

He was a Physical Education Professor at ETSU, where he worked for over 30 years. During his time as the women’s track coach he was selected the Southern Conference Coach of the Year twice.

Mr. Roberts played football at Science Hill High School and also at Georgia Tech under the legendary coach Bobby Dodd.

He was elected to the inaugural class of Science Hill High School Sports Hall of Fame for football and track.

Mr. Roberts was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include; three sons, Tommy Roberts, of DeLand, FL, Greg Roberts and his wife, CoraLynn, of Jacksonville, FL, and Dale Roberts and his wife, Tami, of Johnson City; one brother, Ted Roberts and his wife, Shelia, of Clarksdale, MS; seven Grandchildren, Katie Roberts and Ben Roberts, both of Deland, Logan Roberts and Makenzi Roberts, both of Johnson City, Baby Roberts, Dalton Roberts, of Jacksonville, FL, and Jennifer Shimada, of Weehawken, NJ; one Great Grandson, Dylan Shimada; three nephews, Brent, Brad and Sam.

Memorial services will be conducted at 1:00 pm Monday, June 6, 2011, at Central Baptist Church. Dr. Ron Murray and Rev. R. Willard Warfield will officiate.

Entombment will be held at a later time in the Monte Vista Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the church from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m. Monday.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to Area 3 Special Olympics, Johnson City/Washington Co.
